Food Stamped: A Deep Look at America’s Broken Food System, with Congressman Earl Blumenauer
:  7 to 9 p.m. at the Bagdad Theater, 3702 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd., Portland. Free admission with donation to Oregon Food Bank. Join us for a screening of the hour-long documentary “Food Stamped,” an informative, entertaining and inspiring film about the challenges to low-income families and individuals trying to eat healthy while living on food stamps (view trailer at www.foodstamped.com). Congressman Earl Blumenauer, a leading advocate of shifting farm subsidies away from agribusiness to the small farmer, is the guest speaker. He will discuss one of the most important pieces of legislation to counter hunger -- The Farm Bill. There will also be a brief video presentation about southeast Portland’s Abernathy Elementary: “Planting Seeds of Change, Growing Healthy Kids.” Event sponsored by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland Community Relations Committee, Hazon, Oregon Area Jewish Committee, Oregon Faith Roundtable Against Hunger, and Tuv Ha’Aretz.

Northeast Emergency Food Program's "Sustainers Breakfast." 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Mosaic, 1832 NE Cesar Chavez Blvd., Portland. EMO's Northeast Emergency Food Program (NEFP) invites you to this special event. The keynote speaker will be Commissioner Nick Fish.As our guest, there is no charge for breakfast; donations will be solicited. All contributions go towards sustaining NEFP. Garden Workshop for Congregations. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Tualatin United Methodist Church, 20200 SW Martinazzi Ave., Tualatin. Come learn what it takes to create a community garden that will bring new life to your congregation, build connections with your community, reduce hunger and care for God's creation. Speakers include Leslie Pohl-Kosbau of Shared Gardens and former director of Portland Community Gardens and local natural resource agencies. Hear about the successes, challenges, partnering with other organizations and ensuring sustainability over the long-term from congregations that are supporting community gardens. The first 30 people to attend will get gift certificates for The Garden Corner, and there will be a raffle for prizes, which includes a cubic yard of high quality compost. EMO Shared Housing Benefit: Friends and Family Night at McMenamins Kennedy School. 5 p.m. to close at McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave., Portland. Bring everyone you know for dinner at the Kennedy School's Courtyard Restaurant, because at the end of the night, 50% of the evening's sales are donated to Shared Housing, a program of EMO!
