While we do not support illegal immigration, we believe that we are all children of God, and therefore, we all have a responsibility to treat all fellow human beings with respect, regardless of their legal status. We are especially troubled by recent House legislation that criminalizes acts of human survival and those who provide humanitarian assistance to undocumented immigrants. Illegal immigration is largely driven by economic factors, which have created disparities in income and basic human needs among nations. People seek economic survival by leaving their homeland and families, not by preference, but by necessity. Once in the United States, these undocumented residents are often exploited by unscrupulous employers for their labor at wages below poverty and with no legal protection or representation. Focusing solely on law enforcement and punitive actions without addressing the human needs or the economic policies that fuels illegal immigration would be tantamount to condoning exploitation of these human beings. We must recognize and acknowledge the inherent humanity of undocumented residents. There is a human cost that compels relief agencies, especially religious bodies, to respond to the human and spiritual needs of undocumented residents. We concur with many religious leaders such as Cardinal Roger Mahoney of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who have spoken out so eloquently for justice in immigration. We agree with our sister relief organization, Church World Service, that comprehensive immigration reform must include the following: Provide an opportunity for undocumented residents who have contributed to our country to seek legal status and citizenship in a clear, fair and timely process; Reduce the waiting times for our family-based immigration system so that families can be reunited quicker; Create legal avenues and protection for migrant workers at the workplace such as health and occupational safety, sanitary migrant camps, labor representation and whistle-blower rights; Uphold internationally recognized human rights as the basis of U.S. law while still permitting the authorities the critical task of identifying national security threats and violent criminals; Allow relief agencies, religious groups, and individuals to minister to the human needs of people regardless of their legal status; and Safeguard asylum seekers and assure an opportunity for them to prove their case. When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:33-34 We ask the Congress to embrace immigration reform that includes the above elements not only for the sake of the vulnerable among us, but for the common good of all.
